S.M.U.D. Principle
Our S.M.U.D principle is the best way to remember the top four concerns related to GREEN flooring:
S is for sustainability.
Can the resources required to manufacture
the product sustain its demand?
Cork flooring, for example, is very sustainable due to its ability to thrive in varying climates. This flooring resource is rising in popularity for its ability to keep up with high demand.
M is for make.
Are GREEN manufacturing methods
utilized to make the product?
Some manufacturers use toxic chemicals to manufacture and extend the life of their products. Third party testing agencies maintain strict guidelines that must be followed to attain green manufacturing certifications.
U is for utility.
Is the product intended use long or short term? What are its environment effects?
Before finalizing a flooring product, consult a flooring expert and determine if you are choosing the best product for your project. Quality flooring contractors know performance information specific to your project.
D is for disposal.
How are products disposed of?
Are they recyclable at local service providers?
Unfortunately, some products are so toxic they cannot be recycled. While recycling is a growing practice in our local community, not all materials have local recycling facilities.
